Are Bad NFL Offenses Really Bad for Fantasy Running Backs?

Fantasy managers are constantly warned away from running backs on bad teams. We tested that belief across 10 NFL seasons and 315 primary-RB team-seasons — then asked whether PPR scoring changes the answer. The myth is real, but 2025 produced two extraordinary exceptions.

MYTH CONFIRMED

Bad offenses materially suppress fantasy running back production.

Primary RBs on bottom-10 scoring offenses averaged 24% fewer PPR points per game than primary RBs on top-10 offenses. PPR scoring softened the penalty only slightly. Yet Bijan Robinson and De'Von Achane both broke through 20 PPR points per game on bottom-10 offenses in 2025 — something only 2 of 96 qualifying bad-offense RB seasons accomplished.

THE QUESTION

Does a bad offense really cap a fantasy running back?

The argument sounds obvious. Bad offenses score fewer touchdowns, sustain fewer drives and spend more time playing from behind. All of that should work against running backs, especially those who depend on rushing volume and goal-line opportunities.

But there is a counterargument: negative game scripts can create receiving volume. In PPR formats, an elite pass-catching back may be able to survive — or even thrive — while his team struggles.

To separate those ideas, we analyzed every NFL regular season from 2016 through 2025. For each team-season, the primary running back was identified by combined carries + targets, not by fantasy scoring. Players had to appear in at least eight games.

The final matched sample contained 315 primary-RB team-seasons.

THE MAIN RESULT

Fantasy production fell almost perfectly with offensive quality.

Teams were ranked by points scored per game within each season and divided into Top 10, Middle 12 and Bottom 10 offensive tiers.

A primary RB on a top-10 scoring offense averaged 16.02 PPR points per game. On a bottom-10 offense, that fell to 12.17.

That's a 3.85-point weekly PPR gap — roughly 24% less production on a bottom-10 offense.
STANDARD VS. PPR

PPR helps. It does not erase the bad-offense penalty.

We expected receiving scoring to protect running backs from poor offensive environments. It did — but only slightly.

The percentage decline became smaller as receptions were worth more, but the difference remained substantial in every format. In fact, the raw PPR gap was 3.85 points per game.

THE PPR ANSWER

Pass-catching ability can make a bad environment more survivable. It does not make offensive quality irrelevant.

MEDIAN CHECK

The result wasn't created by a few superstar seasons.

Averages can be distorted by extreme fantasy performances, so we repeated the comparison using the median primary RB in each offensive tier.

The median created the same staircase: Top 10 > Middle 12 > Bottom 10 in Standard, Half-PPR and PPR.

ELITE OUTCOMES

The biggest difference showed up at the top of the fantasy leaderboard.

Instead of asking only what the average RB scored, we measured how often primary backs reached three useful full-PPR thresholds.

Relative comparison: a primary RB on a top-10 offense was 11.04 times as likely to average 20+ PPR points per game as one on a bottom-10 offense.

Elite fantasy scoring was not impossible on bad offenses. It was simply far less common.

ROBUSTNESS CHECK

The result survived different definitions of a “bad team.”

Scoring rank was our primary definition because it most directly captures the offensive environment producing fantasy touchdowns and yards. But we also tested poor teams by record and point differential.

Changing the definition changed the size of the penalty, but never the direction.

STATISTICAL CHECK

The Top-10 vs. Bottom-10 difference was highly significant.

In full PPR, the average difference was −3.85 points per game. The 95% confidence interval for the Bottom-10 minus Top-10 difference ran from −4.98 to −2.72 PPG.

Welch's independent-samples test and a nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test both returned p < .001. The same was true in Standard and Half-PPR scoring.

INTERPRETATION

This is a strong historical association, not proof that offensive scoring rank alone causes the fantasy difference. Better offenses may also have better quarterbacks, lines, coaches and overall personnel.

THE 2025 EXCEPTIONS

Then Bijan Robinson and De'Von Achane broke the rule in the same season.

There were 96 primary-RB seasons attached to bottom-10 scoring offenses in our sample.

Only two reached 20 PPR points per game.

Both happened in 2025.

That means only 2.1% of bottom-10 offense primary-RB seasons reached the 20-PPR-PPG threshold — and the two examples at the top of the list are both fresh in fantasy managers' minds.

The rule is real. Bijan and Achane showed that truly elite RB profiles can still overwhelm a bad environment.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR 2026

Don't ignore team quality — and don't treat it as destiny.

This study supports the concern fantasy managers have when an expensive running back is attached to a projected weak offense. Historically, those players have faced lower averages, lower medians and dramatically lower odds of reaching elite PPR thresholds.

But the 2025 results also show why fantasy analysis cannot stop at team scoring projections. Bijan Robinson and De'Von Achane each produced a 20+ PPR season despite playing on bottom-10 scoring offenses.

Achane is particularly relevant to the current 2026 discussion because managers are again weighing his individual talent and receiving role against concerns about Miami's broader offensive outlook. The historical penalty is real. So is the evidence that Achane has already beaten it.

FANTASY TAKEAWAY

Downgrade the environment. Don't automatically downgrade the player out of elite territory.

A bad offense should be treated as a meaningful risk factor for fantasy running backs in every scoring format. But elite volume, receiving involvement and touchdown talent can still create rare exceptions — exactly what Bijan Robinson and De'Von Achane demonstrated in 2025.

EDGELINE VERDICT

Bad offenses are bad for fantasy running backs.

Across 315 primary-RB team-seasons from 2016 through 2025, running backs attached to bottom-10 scoring offenses produced materially less fantasy value than those on top-10 offenses.

The PPR penalty was approximately 24%. The median results showed the same relationship. Alternative definitions of bad teams produced the same direction. And elite scoring outcomes became dramatically less likely as offensive quality declined.

So the myth is confirmed.

The more useful fantasy lesson, however, is not that every RB on a bad team should be avoided. It's that the player needs an unusually strong profile to overcome the environment.

MYTH CONFIRMED

Bad offense = real RB fantasy risk.

PPR scoring makes the penalty slightly smaller, but it does not make it disappear. Top-10 offense primary RBs were 11 times as likely to reach 20+ PPR PPG as bottom-10 offense primary RBs.

METHODOLOGY

How we tested it.

The study used NFL regular-season player statistics and game results from 2016 through 2025. Running backs and fullbacks were eligible, with a minimum of eight games played.

Each team's primary running back was selected using a scoring-format-neutral opportunity measure: carries + targets. The RB with the most combined opportunities on each team-season was included in the primary sample.

Team offensive quality was ranked within each season using points scored per game. Teams ranked 1–10 were classified as Top-10 offenses, ranks 11–22 as the Middle 12, and ranks 23–32 as Bottom-10 offenses.

Standard and PPR scoring used the fantasy-point fields provided in the underlying nflverse player dataset. Half-PPR was calculated as Standard fantasy points plus 0.5 points per reception.

Robustness checks repeated the bad-team comparison using win percentage and point differential. Statistical validation included mean and median comparisons, Welch's independent-samples tests, 95% confidence intervals and Mann-Whitney U tests.

Interpretation note: This is an observational historical study. It demonstrates a strong association between offensive environment and running-back fantasy scoring, but it does not establish that team scoring rank alone causes the difference. Player talent, offensive line quality, quarterback play, coaching, injuries and role concentration may also contribute.
