Myth Debunked: Rookie and First-Time Starting QBs Do Not Boost Tight End Fantasy Value
Do rookie quarterbacks target tight ends more? We tested one of fantasy football's oldest assumptions across NFL seasons from 2013 through 2025. The “safety blanket” may show up in target share — but it does not produce a reliable fantasy boost.

Rookie and first-time starting quarterbacks did not produce a statistically significant increase in primary-TE targets or fantasy scoring. The strongest rookie-QB signal was a worse offensive environment.
Does an inexperienced QB make his tight end more valuable?
Every draft season, the same argument appears: a rookie or first-time starting quarterback will lean on his tight end as an easy, dependable “safety blanket.” The football logic is intuitive. Tight ends often work short and intermediate areas, giving an inexperienced passer a nearby option when the first read is covered.
But fantasy football does not reward a narrative. It rewards receptions, yards and touchdowns. So we tested whether inexperienced quarterbacks actually increase tight-end usage and fantasy production.
We separated quarterback situations into established starters, rookies and first-time starters, then identified the primary tight end in each qualifying offense. The full sample contained 318 established-QB TE seasons, 36 rookie-QB TE seasons and 19 first-time-starter TE seasons.
The fantasy boost isn't there.
Primary tight ends with established quarterbacks averaged 9.63 PPR points per game. Rookie-QB tight ends averaged 8.84. First-time-starter tight ends averaged 10.01. Neither inexperienced-QB group produced a statistically significant PPR advantage.

For rookie QBs, target share was only +0.32 percentage points versus established starters (p = .659; trivial effect). Targets per game were actually 0.08 lower (p = .760). PPR scoring was 0.78 points per game lower (p = .129).
First-time starters showed somewhat more TE usage — +1.45 target-share points and +0.36 targets per game — but neither result was statistically significant. Their +0.38 PPR PPG difference was also trivial and non-significant (p = .662).
Rookie-QB offenses created fewer opportunities.
The most statistically convincing result had nothing to do with tight-end preference. It was the overall offensive environment.
* Statistically significant. First downs: p < .001, d = −0.826. Red-zone drives: p = .0001, d = −0.832. Both are large effects.
Teams with rookie quarterbacks generated 1.63 fewer first downs per game and 0.44 fewer red-zone drives per game. Both differences were highly statistically significant and carried large effect sizes.
The safety-blanket behavior may be real. The fantasy boost isn't.
Comparing different tight ends can hide the effect we're trying to measure, so we ran a paired before/after test: the same primary tight end on the same team before and after a switch from an established quarterback to an inexperienced one.

For rookie quarterbacks, 12 of 14 tight ends increased target share. The Wilcoxon test reached p = .0419, although the mean-change test and bootstrap confidence interval did not clear conventional significance thresholds. That makes the usage pattern interesting, but not enough to claim a dependable fantasy effect.
And the fantasy results are the key: those same TEs averaged only +0.34 targets per game and actually lost 0.29 PPR points per game. Only 42.9% increased PPR scoring.
The “safety blanket” may describe how a rookie distributes a slightly larger share of his passing game. It does not mean the tight end receives more total fantasy value.
More intriguing, but not actionable yet.
The paired first-time-starter sample leaned positive: target share rose 3.08 points, targets rose 0.88 per game, and PPR scoring rose 1.30 points per game. Seventy percent of the 10 qualifying TEs increased PPR scoring, and 60% gained at least one PPR point per game.
But N = 10 is small, the PPR confidence interval stretched from −1.10 to +3.50, and the p-value was .319. Trimming the largest positive and negative observations did not erase the tendency, so it is worth revisiting as the sample grows. It is not strong enough to draft around today.
Don't draft the narrative.
If you're choosing between tight ends and the argument for one of them is simply that his rookie quarterback will use him as a safety blanket, do not add fantasy value for that reason alone.
Across 13 seasons, we found no statistically significant increase in primary-TE targets or fantasy scoring with rookie quarterbacks. First-time starters produced an interesting but uncertain paired-sample tendency, not a proven edge.
The strongest rookie-QB result pointed the other way: fewer first downs and fewer red-zone drives. Evaluate the tight end's talent, role, target competition and offensive quality instead of assuming an inexperienced quarterback creates a fantasy boost.
No automatic TE upgrade.
The historical data does not support boosting a tight end solely because his offense is starting a rookie or first-time starting quarterback.
How we tested it.
The study used regular-season weekly NFL player data from 2013 through 2025. Primary tight ends were grouped by quarterback experience and compared on target share, targets per game, standard fantasy scoring, PPR fantasy scoring and offensive environment.
We used Welch tests for independent-group comparisons, bootstrap 95% confidence intervals, Cohen's d effect sizes, paired/one-sample tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests for same-TE transitions, plus a simple max/min trimming check for outlier sensitivity.
Scoring: Standard and PPR values are based on the fantasy-point fields in the underlying weekly dataset.
