Stacks Don't Create Points. They Concentrate Them.
Most fantasy players already understand the basic risk and reward of pairing a quarterback with one of his pass catchers. We weren't trying to prove that correlation exists. We wanted to measure how drastic the difference actually is — and whether that tradeoff should matter differently in redraft, the fantasy playoffs and DFS.
Almost no extra points. A lot more volatility.
Across QB+WR1, QB+WR2 and QB+TE1 stacks, average combined scoring barely moved. But stacked pairs produced materially more weekly variance, more 50+ point explosions and more double-bust weeks.
We know stacking is volatile. How volatile?
Stacking is not some hidden fantasy concept. If your quarterback throws a touchdown to your receiver, you score twice on the same play. If the passing offense collapses, two lineup spots can disappoint together. Most experienced fantasy players understand the tradeoff intuitively.
The useful question is not whether that relationship exists. It is how large the effect actually is. Does stacking meaningfully raise expected scoring? How much more volatile does the combination become? And how often does the extra upside translate into the type of monster week that can matter in a tournament or a must-win matchup?
A draft-day test, not a hindsight test.
We used ESPN preseason fantasy depth-chart designations from 2016 through 2025 and froze each team's QB1, WR1, WR2 and TE1 before the season. Those labels never changed based on what happened afterward.
That distinction matters. If a preseason WR2 broke out and became the team's highest-scoring receiver, he remained WR2 in this study because that was the role fantasy managers were actually drafting. Actual stacks were compared with unstacked combinations from the same season and designation.
Stacks didn't create more points.
If stacking itself made a fantasy combination more valuable, the most basic place to see it would be average combined scoring. We didn't.

None of those differences was statistically significant. From an expected-points perspective, the stacked and unstacked combinations were essentially identical.
The distribution changed dramatically.
Standard deviation is where the difference becomes obvious. QB+WR1 stacks were 17.7% more volatile than unstacked QB+WR1 combinations. WR2 stacks were 13.6% more volatile, and TE1 stacks were 12.0% more volatile. All three differences were highly statistically significant.

The coefficient of variation produced essentially the same result, so the effect was not simply caused by the different scoring levels of WR1s, WR2s and tight ends.
Stacked QB/pass-catcher weekly scoring correlations were 0.345 for WR1, 0.298 for WR2 and 0.265 for TE1. Comparable unstacked correlations were effectively zero. The two players' fantasy outcomes really do move together.
More explosions — and more disasters.
The volatility is easier to appreciate when we stop talking about standard deviation and look at actual big weeks.

The same correlation that gives a lineup access to the right tail also gives it access to the left tail. QB+WR1 stacks produced 50+ combined points almost 59% more often — but also produced double-bust weeks almost 50% more often.

Volatility feels different when one bad week ends your season.
That doesn't necessarily make volatility bad. But in season-long head-to-head fantasy, a huge Week 8 score cannot be carried forward into Week 16. Once the fantasy playoffs arrive, the downside side of correlation deserves more attention.

Here, a severe down week means the stack scored at or below the 25th percentile of the comparable unstacked distribution from that exact season, week and role.
This does not prove stacking reduces championship odds. That's not what we tested. It shows the tradeoff a manager is choosing: materially wider weekly outcomes without a meaningful increase in expected combined points. In a single-elimination week, that can be consequential.
The same volatility can have very different value.
In redraft, stacking is largely a risk preference. A 55-point stack that turns a comfortable win into a blowout does not bank unused points for the following week. A correlated dud in the playoffs can end the season.
Large-field DFS creates a different incentive. Finishing slightly above average may have little value when the objective is to reach the extreme right tail of a tournament. Our data does not test DFS salary, ownership, lineup construction or ROI, so it cannot prove that stacking is automatically profitable in DFS.
What it does show is why the strategy is attractive there: compared with unstacked pairs, 50+ point weeks occurred 58.7% more often for QB+WR1, 74.5% more often for QB+WR2 and 89.6% more often for QB+TE1.
Redraft: decide whether the increased variance fits your risk preference. DFS tournaments: the increased probability of an extreme ceiling outcome may be exactly the feature you're trying to access.
Know what you're buying.
The myth isn't that stacking creates correlation. Fantasy players already know that. The myth worth testing is that intentionally stacking your quarterback with a pass catcher somehow gives your lineup more expected fantasy points.
Across ten seasons, it essentially didn't. What stacking purchased was a different distribution: more volatility, more monster weeks and more weeks where both players failed together.
Stacking is a volatility choice, not free expected value.
If you choose the stack, do it because the correlated ceiling fits your format and strategy — not because the combination inherently produces more average fantasy points.
How we tested it.
We used preseason fantasy depth-chart designations from 2016–2025 to identify each team's QB1, WR1, WR2 and TE1 before the regular season. Those labels were frozen for the entire year. The underlying weekly fantasy scoring came from nflverse player data.
For each actual stack, we constructed unstacked controls by pairing that QB with other teams' preseason players at the same designation. Pair-level volatility analysis required at least six common weekly-stat observations.
Playoff analysis: Weeks 13–17 were compared with the unstacked average and distribution from the exact same season, week and role. A severe down week was defined as a score at or below that comparison group's 25th percentile.
